About Parque Nacional Macarao

Parque Nacional Macarao is a protected natural area situated on the northwestern edge of Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, spanning the Distrito Capital and parts of Miranda state. Established in 1973 to safeguard the unique cloud forests and native flora and fauna of the region, it comprises rugged mountainous terrain with steep slopes, pristine rivers, and dense, humid forests. The park’s elevation varies from around 700 meters to peaks exceeding 2,500 meters, resulting in a wide range of microclimates and habitats. Native vegetation includes tropical montane forest species, many endemic or rare, which provide refuge for wildlife such as the Venezuelan red howler monkey, spectacled bear, and numerous bird species like toucans and parrots. Visitors are drawn to Macarao for its extensive network of hiking trails that showcase waterfalls, panoramic vistas over Caracas and the Caribbean coastline, and opportunities for birding and photography. The park also protects the Macarao Reservoir, an important water supply for Caracas. Due to its proximity to the city and varied terrain, Macarao serves both as a natural escape for locals and as an outdoor recreation destination offering moderate hikes, camping, and ecological study. Conservation efforts continue to manage human impact and urban encroachment, preserving this vital green lung near a major metropolitan area.
